Determining Vulnerability to Hazardous Materials
Since 1986, states and local governments have recognized the risk posed to their communities by hazardous materials through compliance with Superfund Amendment and Reauthorization Act (SARA) Title III. That risk, though, is always changing. We defined the risk at and near those facilities using and storing hazardous materials in Lewis and Upshur Counties (West Virginia) by analyzing on-site quantities; likely means of releases; environmental features, residential populations, and critical facilities in isolation radii; and plume modeling. The project concluded with a list of planning and training recommendations for emergency responders serving those communities.
